Abstract
A class of bacteriocins known as lantibiotics, are small ribosomally synthesized and post translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) containing lanthionine rings. In this study, 24 novel putative lantibiotic biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) were identified from NCBI genome database. BGC of Streptomyces filamentosus NRRL 11379, encoding Roseocin was characterized by heterologous coexpressíon of the minimally required genes in E. coli. The lanthipeptides were purified to homogeneity, and characterized by mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial activity analysis of activated Roseocin established it to be a novel two component lantibiotic.
