Challenges in Translating Culture A Study of the Select English Translated Social Novels of S L Bhyrappa

Abstract

In the absence of translation, the world would have been a bundle of several airtight boxes. Since no single person can read, write, speak, or comprehend a wide variety of languages, translation appears to be a useful technique for experiencing literature from other languages and geographical areas. Translation, as a technique is used to familiarise and honor the uncharted literary territories whenever excellence is recognized in them. Additionally, translation develops acquaintances at national and international levels for audiences keen on reading the world s literature. At present, translation is recognized as a creative endeavor that contributes to the exchange of technical knowledge, literary enrichment, and cross-cultural understanding. Translation is the process of transferring ideas from one social group s language into another group s suitable expression. It involves cultural encrypting, reversing, and decoding. Translations of the literature of different languages into another language and from another language into its own have shown to be essential in the contemporary era, because of this, today, we have access to practically most of the world s literature. The evolving field of Translation Studies has made a departure from a more formalist switch to a translation methodology that prioritizes extratextual elements. It advanced from just concentrating on discussing the definition of faithfulness in translation to more specific questions of context, culture, history, and convention. The process of translation is quite complex, and it demands careful study. It can be examined on various levels, including within the same cultural context, across civilizations, and the translation of ancient literature into the contemporary translation of technical terms into another language, whether it be the same language or not. When it comes to choosing equivalencies and comprehension, translation presents significant challenges. With persistence and effort, the translator can attempt to address these issues.
