Abstract
Biodiesel is a valuable alternative for diesel fuel usage and the
newlineinevitable resource depletion and pollution problems of the globe. a large
newlineamount of used cooking oil (uco) produced around the world and a very
newlinemeager amount of uco is being recycled. the mankind can tap the energy
newlineavailable from the uco and can reduce the usage of petroleum products as
newlinefuel for automobiles and lubricants for machinery operation to considerable
newlineextent and will provide amicable solution to the economic and environmental
newlineissues. the uco can be collected from the stakeholders to reuse as a
newlinebiodiesel otherwise it will end up as a waste in the sewage.
newlineuco based biodiesel production is important because it can be
newlinechanged into other useable form using easy chemical treatment process called
newlinetransesterification. this process provides the biodiesel with properties
newlineanalogous to diesel. biodiesel has zero sulphur content and offers a significant
newlinereduction in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. uco based biodiesel were used to improve the performance and emission characteristics of a variable compression ratio (vcr) four stroke multi fuel engine. because of their lower carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon
newlineemissions, diesel and used cooking oil blends are increasingly being used as
newlineprimary fuel. in this work, additional hydroxyl (hho) gas is being introduced
newlineinto the combustion process of standard diesel fuel blended with used cooking
newlineoil to see the effects on brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal
newlineefficiency, and emission characteristics. the engine parameters (compression
newlineratio, injection pressure, injection timing) and hho flow rate were optimised
newlineby response surface methodology (rsm) to set the testing conditions for
newlineexperimental investigation. the experimental investigation was carried out for
newlinethe test conditions that arrived based on the rsm analysis.
