Abstract
AIMS OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of honey / frozen juice (Papaya) / fresh fruit juice (Papaya) along with oral care protocol in reducing oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy among oncology clients in Devaki Hospital at Madurai. The matter has been studied in the specific reference to oncology clients in Devaki Hospital, Madurai. The conceptual framework adopted for this study is based on the Wiedenbach s helping art of Clinical Nursing Theory (1964). METHODS: The study is a pre experimental research (group I, group II and group III experimental study). 300 clients with chemotherapy induced oral mucositis (divided into three groups with 100 samples each) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. Written permission was obtained for the samples prior to the study. Confidentiality was ensured to all the respondents. The researcher conducted the pre-test and administered the intervention. Post-test 1 and 2 were conducted at the end of the first and second months respectively after the intervention. The tool for data collection consists of two parts, Part-I: demographic and clinical variables and Part-II: Standardized Oral assessment guide-oral mucositis by Eilers (1988). CONCLUSION: It is important that nurses get the ability to face the challenges of today`s fast paced technique advanced in nursing practice. Literature repeatly stresses that nurse must be able to do things differently. In this study, the researcher has tried to investigate the effectiveness of honey/frozen juice (Papaya)/ fresh fruit juice (Papaya) along with oral care protocol to reduce chemotherapy induced oral mucositis among oncology clients. It is believed that frozen cubes to help in inducing more absorption than fresh juice. The cancer clients were satisfied and happy with the treatment received. The result of the present study shows a great need to provide adequate symptoms relieving therapies to the oncology clients. The study also lays emphasis on the effectiveness of honey.
