This study explores the effectiveness of mnemonic strategies specifically keyword and first-letter mnemonics compared to traditional rote memorization methods in improving memory retention among students aged 11 to 18 years. Conducted on a sample of 400 students from grades 8 to 12 in Haryana, India, the study investigates whether mnemonic techniques can enhance both immediate and delayed recall and examines the role of gender in memory retention. The central objectives of this research are to assess the efficacy of mnemonic strategies in memory retention compared to traditional memorization, evaluate the difference in performance between immediate and delayed recall, explore any potential gender-based differences in the effectiveness of mnemonics, and provide practical recommendations for educators on integrating these strategies into classroom instruction. The thesis builds on cognitive theories of memory, which explain the processes of encoding, storage, and retrieval, and discusses how mnemonic techniques aid in the transfer of information from short-term to long-term memory. newline
