Abstract
This research report underlined the IMPACT OF MICROFINANCE FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF SELF-HELP GROUPS WITH REFERENCE TO CHENNAI CITY . In India, the concept of microfinance started in 1974 in Gujarat as Shri Mahila SEWA Sahakari Bank, which is registered as an Urban Co-Operative Bank. The Microfinance sector has been witnessing a tremendous growth during the last few years in India in terms of geographical area, loan portfolio and outreach. Self Help Groups in Chennai city represents the landscape of urban poor. The present study was undertaken with the main objective of understanding the microfinance activities of the self-help groups and the impact of microfinance for the performance of the self-help groups. Even though impact of microfinance is analysed using AIMS impact assessment method generally in India and Bangladesh, where the Impact Assessment (IA) is carried out in three levelsHousehold, Enterprise and Individual Level. There is need to understand the impact of microfinance for the performance of self-help groups through the members Expectation , of the different dimensions of Microfinance impact on their lives, their Agreement towards it there by finding the difference between their Expectation and Agreement and comparing it the Satisfaction level. This study tried to understand the problems through different dimensions also.
