Correlation of fetuin a fibroblast growth factor 23 and osteoprotegerin among atients with chronic kidney disease

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease CKD is a chronic no communicable disease and major global health burden with adverse outcomes of renal failure cardiovascular disease CVD and premature death In CKD there is association between atherosclerosis and vascular calcification The study was aimed to find the correlation among serum biomarkers hs CRP Fetuin A FA Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 FGF23 and Osteoprotegerin OPG in various stages of CKD patients This cross-sectional study was conducted by recruiting 123 CKD patients aged 20 to 80 years of both genders from the Department of Nephrology Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research Chennai IEC approval and written informed consent were obtained HCRP was estimated by Immuno turbidimetry FA FGF23 and OPG were measured by ELISA Intima media thickness IMT and peak systolic velocity PSV were measured in common carotid and internal carotid arteries and abdominal aorta by ultrasonography Based on the presence of normality of distribution appropriate statistical methods were used Statistics was performed using R software version 3point 6point 2 P value lt 0 point 05 was considered statistically significant Results The results of the study showed that hs-CRP FGF23 and OPG were increased while FA was decreased in stage five of CKD patients There was correlation among the biomarkers and calcium phosphorus product IMT and PSV were increased in the major arteries IMT and PSV showed correlation with the levels of biomarkers Conclusion Increased hs-CRP FGF23 OPG and decreased FA levels are potential markers of cardiovascular complications in CKD patients IMT and PSV could indicate vascular calcification in CKD patients Hence evaluation of these biomarkers in the early stages of chronic kidney disease might guide in implementing prevention strategies to decrease the mortality and morbidity in CKD patients newline
