Development of high performance mimo detection algorithms for next generation communication systems

Abstract

Multiple Input Multiple Output MIMO system is a promising technology for wireless communication It enhances the capacity of the communication system without the need of any extra bandwidth MIMO is one of the core technologies for some new wireless standards that includes IEEE 80211n Long Term Evolution Advanced LTEA 3G and 4G standards In MIMO the use of multiple transmitting and receiving antennas increases the data rate without additional spectral resources At MIMO receiver the greatest challenge is to efficiently receive the transmitted signal from the multiple antennas The key challenges for the design of any MIMO receivers are to recover the signal with high performance and low complexity In order to improve the performance of the receiver more number of MIMO detection algorithms are developed They also resolve the trade-off between the performance and the computational complexity From the large varieties of the MIMO detection algorithms Maximum Likelihood ML detection is the optimum algorithm because it gives the optimal solution with reduced Bit Error Rate BER but its computational complexity grows exponentially with increase in the number of transmitting and receiving antennas Next linear detection algorithms such as Zero Forcing ZF Successive Interference Cancellation SIC or Minimum Mean Square Error MMSE detection are developed to reduce the complexity of the MIMO system These algorithms are significantly reduces the computational complexity but they have high BER newline
