Abstract
In spite of public health and medical communities are strengthening their
newlineefforts to fight the growing burden of Cardio Vascular Disease CVD with dyslipidemia
newlinecontributing to atherosclerosis it continues to be the number one killer worldwide Dietary
newlinechanges or specific dietary supplements can play a significant role in the treatment of
newlinehyperlipidemia Hence the present study was undertaken to formulate standardize and evaluate
newlinethe efficacy of heart friendly mix on selected cardiovascular and hypercholesterolemic subjects
newlineMETHODS Heart friendly mix was formulated and standardized organoleptically using the heart
newlinefriendly ingredients such as barley 15g soy flour 20g curry leaves 5g onions 10g
newlinepumpkin 10g pumpkin seeds or almond 5g flaxseed 15g garlic10g and amla 10g and
newlineethical clearance HEC dot 2010 dot 18 was obtained for the feeding trial For the conduct of the
newlinesupplementation study a cardiac care clinic located in Coimbatore district was approached and in
newlinea period of three months 369 cardiovascular subjects were studied using an interview schedule and
newlineamong them 63 subjects who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of BMI above 25 blood pressure
newlinebelow 140 per 90 mmHg and total cholesterol above 200 mg per dl were selected for the supplementation study Among them the experimental group 30 was supplemented with 100g per day of amla based heart friendly mix with almond for a period of 4 months And to conduct the intervention trial in rural areas an NGO Shanti Ashram was approached and 282 people residing in their service villages were screened for hypercholesterolemia among them 80 subjects having total cholesterol greater than 200mg per dl fasting glucose less than 126mg per dl and blood pressure less than 140 per 80mmHg were selected for the supplementation process and experimental group 40 was supplemented with 100g per day of amla based heart friendly mix with pumpkin seed for a period of four months The effect of supplementation was statistically analyzed using students t test and ancova
