Abstract
Prevalence of tobacco is higher in the rural than the urban areas of India.
newlineUnlike tobacco cessation clinics, community based smoking cessation intervention has the
newlinepotential to reach a wider section of the community to assist in smoking cessation in the
newlinerural setting. The present study is aimed to assess the effectiveness of smoking cessation
newlineinterventions among the rural population of Mappedu, Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu.
newlineMaterials and Methods: Current daily smoking residents in the age group of 20-80 years
newlinewere allocated to conventional group, Telephone group and Short Video Broadcast groups
newlineof smoking cessation interventions.Self reported abstinence, expired carbon monoxide in
newlinebreath and salivary cotinine levels were assessed at 2nd week,3rd month,6th month,9th
newlinemonth and 12th month follow up intervals. ANOVA test was used to compare the
newlinedifferences between the three groups.
newlineResults: The mean salivary cotinine level was significantly reduced in the SVB Model
newlinegroup as compared to Conventional and Telephone groups. The mean salivary cotinine
newlinelevel in the SVB Model group at the baseline was 11.71 +_3.40 and was 10.39 +_3.35 in
newlinethe 12
newlineth month follow up and the results were statistically significant (p-0.000).
newlineConclusion: Behavioural approaches for smoking cessation programmes can motivate
newlinepeople in smoking in rural areas.
