The present thesis reports, the results of investigations carried out on title newline Preparation and Characterization of Biocompatible Polymer-Magnetic newlineNanocomposites . This thesis also reports the results of solution state newlinestudies by refractive index, ultrasonic velocity, density, and viscosity newlinemethods, chemical group analysis of polymer blends in solid state by newlineFTIR, morphology by SEM, DSC-Tg measurements, thermal degradation newlineproperty by TGA, mechanical properties (tensile strength), newlinephysicochemical evaluation and drug release kinetic study. newlineWater soluble polymers have been studied by several researchers due to newlinetheir blood compatibility, non-toxic, non-immunogenic, non-mutagenic newlineand non-carcinogenic nature. Synthetic and natural polymers are used for newlinenumerous applications in the biomedical field. However the properties of newlinepure synthetic polymers and those of pure biological polymers alone are newlineoften inadequate to produce materials with good combination of chemical, newlinemechanical, thermal and biological performance characteristics. Hence a newlineset of new polymeric materials (biocompatible polymer blends) have been newlineprepared by blending the natural, semi-synthetic and synthetic water newlinesoluble polymers like hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), Xanthan newlinegum (XG), Guar gum (GG), Methylcellulose (MC) and Poly (vinyl newlinealcohol) (PVA). Further biocompatible maghemite nanoparticles were used newlineto prepare polymer blend nanocomposites and studied for the newlinecompatibilising effect of maghemite on polymer blends. newlineThe properties of polymer blends depend on their miscibility at molecular newlinelevel. Solution techniques are providing as much information as solid state newlinetechniques to probe miscibility of polymer blends. Hence the miscibility of newlinethe polymer blends are studied in solution state and then it is confirmed in newlinesolid state. In solution state the miscible windows of polymer blends are newlineidentified by using simple and rapid techniques such as ultrasonic velocity, newlinerefractive index, and density. Further, the miscibility in solution state is newlineconfirmed
