A Comparative Clinical Study of Vijaysar Jala and Tablet Metformin in the Management of Prameha Purvarupavastha with Special Reference to Prediabetes

Abstract

The present clinical study entitled A Comparative Clinical Study of Vijaysar Jala and Tablet Metformin in the Management of Prameha Purvarupavastha with Special Reference to Prediabetes was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Vijaysar Jala (Phanta Kashaya of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.) in prediabetes, correlating the Ayurveda concept of Prameha Purvarupavastha with modern prediabetes. Considering the rising global burden of diabetes and the importance of early intervention, the study aimed to assess whether Vijaysar Jala could serve as an effective preventive and therapeutic option. newlineThe study was designed as an interventional, randomized, open-label, active-controlled, comparative clinical trial conducted at an Ayurveda teaching hospital after obtaining Institutional Ethics Committee approval. A total of 64 patients diagnosed with prediabetes were randomly divided into two groups: Group A received Vijaysar Jala, and Group B received Tablet Metformin. Diagnosis and assessment were based on Ayurveda Purvarupa symptoms of Prameha and objective biochemical parameters, including fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels. The results demonstrated significant improvement in both groups. Group A showed an overall improvement of 71%, while Group B showed 66% improvement. In the Vijaysar Jala group, a higher proportion of patients achieved marked improvement in subjective symptoms such as Prabhutmutrata, Pipasavriddhi, Kshudhavriddhi, Daurbalya, and Naktamutrata. Although the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (p gt 0.05), the trend indicated better symptomatic relief with Vijaysar Jala. Both interventions were found to be safe and well tolerated, with no adverse events reported. The anti-glycaemic effect of Vijaysar is attributed to its bioactive constituents and its Tikta Kashaya properties, which enhance Dhatvagni and metabolic balance.
