Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The patients rely on health care professionals for their early recovery. Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) needs constant medical support to maintain organ functioning and prevent complications due to diseases. Nurses are the dominant group of health care professionals involving inpatient care. The intensive care unit team is entirely responsible for meeting the needs of critically ill patients. Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is the most severe healthcare-associated infections. VAP occurs in 9 27% of all intubated patients. It lengthens the ICU and hospital stay, thereby indirectly increases morbidity, mortality, and treatment cost.
newlineAIM: Tocompare the incidence of VAP rates between patients who receive Conventional VAP prevention bundle and Modified VAP prevention bundle
newlineMATERIALS and METHODS: A Quasi-Experimental method Pre-test Post-test Control study was conducted from December 2016 to March 2018 in the intensive care units of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, Coimbatore, India. The data was collected by using the CPIS tool. A score of less than six was selected as study participants. Convenient sampling technique was used in the present study to select the samples.
newlineRESULTS: A total of 420 patients were included in this study and assessed with the CPIS score. 56.1% (236) patients were male and 43.8% (184) patients were female. The occurrence of VAP was 6.19% (13) in the Experimental group and 14.29% (30) in the Control group. The calculated p-value is 0.01. VAP Incidence rate in Experimental group 8.29 per 1000 ventilator days and in Control group 16.93 per 1000 ventilator days
newline CONCLUSION: There was a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of VAP among patients in the Experimental group than in the Control group. So Modified VAP Prevention bundle was effective to reduce the incidence of VAP.
