Abstract
Optical fiber providing large bandwidth with low transmission loss
newlineis the solution to the high bandwidth demand of todays data centric
newlinebandwidth intensive applications Wavelength Division Multiplexing WDM
newlinetechnology exploits the large bandwidth available in an optical fiber by
newlinesimultaneous transmission of optical signals on different wavelengths over a
newlinesingle fiber There is an extensive deployment of wavelength routed circuit
newlineswitched optical WDM networks in telecommunication networks Routing in
newlinethe optical domain is carried out using Optical Cross Connects OXC
newlineIn a wavelength routed optical network it is possible to establish
newlineLightpaths which are all optical paths between the source and destination node
newlinePairs The traffic over a lightpath is carried without any Optical Electronic
newlineOptical O E O conversions at the intermediate nodes The nodes between
newlinewhich a lightpath is established will become neighbours irrespective of their
newlinephysical locations The set of all lightpaths forms the virtual topology which
newlineis the topology seen by the higher layers of the network The virtual topology
newlineis designed to optimize the network performance The traffic demand in the
newlinenetwork is dynamic
