Abstract
newlineConjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is an anti-cancerous, anti-oxidant and antiatherogenic
newlineomega fatty acid. Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens (B. fibrisolvens) a rumen-origin
newlinemicrobe, converts Linoleic Acid (LA) to c9, t11-CLA, a highly active isomer of CLA.
newlineThe aim of this study was to isolate a high CLA B. fibrisolvens to delineate their
newlinecapability as potential probiotic for animals. A total of 257 pure anaerobic cultures were isolated and further characterized on the basis of morphological, biochemical and molecular characteristics. One hundred and thirty nine isolates were identified as Butyrivibrio spp. after initial Gram s staining and biochemical tests, out of which 24 isolates were confirmed as Butyrivibrio spp. On the basis of molecular characterization using Butyrivibrio 16s rRNA specific primers. These results were further confirmed by the sequencing of PCR products.
newlineThe results of these findings put forward a high CLA producing B. fibrisolvens F-7 isolate that can beneficially affect immune function and can be further exploited as probiotic for animals.
