Abstract
The seasonal and unsteady nature of non- conventional energy sources
newlinecombined with their low dc output often calls for high power conditioning circuits for use
newlinein various applications like pumping water, heating, electricity generation, battery
newlinecharging in electric vehicles etc. Apparently, power electronic converters with high gain
newlineare required for efficient power conversion from such sources. Classical boost converters
newlinehave gain limitations attributed to their internal losses and semiconductor switching
newlinestress.
newlineTherefore, new converter topologies with high voltage step-up ratio are being
newlinedeveloped in recent times. These topologies however have their own merits and
newlinedrawbacks when employed in renewable energy applications. The drawbacks include
newlinehigh input current ripple, high stress across semiconductor switches, high switching losses
newlineand therefore low efficiency. Researchers have attempted to overcome all these
newlinedrawbacks by adopting different control strategies, soft switching techniques, topological
newlinemodifications and introducing additional circuits to name a few.
newlineThough these attempts were successful in overcoming certain drawbacks, all
newlinethe drawbacks could not be rectified in one converter configuration. Therefore, efforts to
newlineintegrate two converter topologies are undertaken so that the benefits of both can be
newlinecombined to overcome the drawbacks successfully. Different combinations of converter s
newlineare tried with an aim to improve the gain simultaneously having minimal switch count,
newlineminimal ripple and stress.
newlineIn the present work, a single stage converter has been implemented due to
newlineseveral advantages when compared to a two-stage converter. The advantages are a single
newlineswitch, single control circuitry, less size, more economical and high efficiency
