Control Algorithms for Power Quality Improvement in Wind based Distributed Power Generation System

Abstract

This report presents the comprehensive study about the power quality features of newlinestandalone distributed power generation system employing the single phase self excited newlineinduction generator (SEIG) and three phase SEIG driven by wind energy. This system is very newlinemuch helpful to provide the electricity for remotely located area where grid supply is not newlineaccessible. Generally, the power quality problems occur due to the extensive use of nonlinear newlineloads such as battery chargers, television, static controllers etc. The power quality problems are newlineidentified as harmonics mitigation, reactive power compensation, load balancing and neutral newlinecurrent compensation in different operating conditions. Grid connected systems are always newlineposing the voltage and frequency problems but can be solved with some grid synchronization newlinetechniques. Sometimes grid connected systems are not reliable especially in remote area and newlinetherefore, this work is devoted towards the standalone operation of distributed power generation newlinesystem. It is more reliable and easy to control. The major problem is the voltage and frequency newlineregulation along with power quality features of the generator feeding linear or nonlinear load. To newlineovercome these problems VSC (Voltage source converter) is used at load end and operated as an newlineactive filter. This filter is helpful to mitigate the aforesaid power quality issues. In addition to it, newlinevoltage and frequency control at the point of common coupling (PCC) is achieved. The control newlinealgorithms are designed and implemented with the help of MATLAB simulation and newlineimpleamentation for providing controlled performance. In this work, wind based single phase newlineSEIG system and three phase SEIG have been taken for power quality features study and newlinedifferent control algorithms are implemented for active filter operation. That yields reliable and newlinecontrolled performance of system.
