Abstract
Microgrid, an entity of localised power generation is capable of being connected to
newlinethe traditional centralised power grid. India has one of the most robust microgrid markets deployed to fill in for an unreliable utility grid, reach new off-grid customers
newlineand reduce carbon emissions. The American, European and Asian microgrid demonstration facilities exist for the testing and verification of various microgrid
newlinefeatures. Synchronization of ac microgrids to the power grid facilitates stable, economic
newlinesystem operation and delivers power of high quality for the utility requirements.
newlineMicrogrids are equipped with controls necessary for managing the operation
newlinein islanded or grid connected modes. The critical element in grid synchronization is
newlinethe current control strategy meeting the standards for interconnection to the grid.
newlineThe grid synchronisation challenge mainly lies in accurately identifying the time
newlineinstant so that for a given voltage, frequency and phase of the main grid and that
newlineof the microgrid, no circulating current flows in the system. However, the existing
newlinemethods lack emphasis on power quality and load sharing capabilities of grid connected
newlineconverters. The objective of the research is to develop a highly reliable grid
newlinesynchronization technique for a microgrid to achieve power quality, load sharing,
newlinestability and smooth transition between islanded and grid connected modes.
newlineThe design, simulation and analysis of Communication Assisted Proportional
newlineResonant Control (CANAPRC) technique in three-phase grid connected converters
newlinehas been implemented. Controller Area Network (CAN) is used as the communication
newlinechannel. In the proposed scheme, the grid synchronizing system taps the grid
newlinevoltage at high speed and transmits it over the communication network. Simulations
newlineare carried out such that simultaneous synchronization of two micro-sources
newlineto the ac distribution system is achieved, wherein the phase template of the grid is
newlinepassed through the reliable, fast and fault tolerant Controller Area Network.
