Abstract
The present work is a modest attempt towards analyzing different aspects associated with
newlinemulti stage evaporating cooling for providing thermal comfort in buildings.
newlineThe importance of this research work is to focus the application of multistage evaporative
newlinecooling system in Indian climate for thermal comfort in buildings leading to
newlineenvironmental protection by reducing the CFC level and depletion of ozone layer. For the
newlinebenefit of the society, the evaporative cooling may be suitable alternative of
newlineconventionally used vapor compression cooling technique.
newlineExperimental studies on evaporative cooling pads made of different materials are
newlinepresented. Cooling pads of two different configurations called as Type-1 (25 gram fibers)
newlineand Type-2 (50 gram fibers) using two new materials e.g. Palash and Coconut fibers and
newlinetwo conventionally used materials e.g. Aspen and Khus fibers were prepared and tested.
newlineSaturation effectiveness was calculated and compared for different pad materials. The
newlinepresent study shows that the performance of coconut fibers pad is comparable with that of
newlineaspen pad. Khus pad was found to be less effective than all other pads tested. Palash (new
newlinematerial) showed highest saturation effectiveness. Heat and mass transfer coefficients for
newlinefour different pad materials were also calculated and the correlations for saturation
newlineeffectiveness of evaporative cooling pads were developed. A regenerative cooler was
newlinedesigned, fabricated and tested in the laboratory. Effectiveness and COP of the
newlineregenerative evaporative cooler were computed.
