analytical investigations on mechanical properties of al 6082 using friction stir processing

Abstract

newline Friction stir processing (FSP) has recently become an effective microstructural modifications technique. Reported results showed that for different alloys, FSP produces very fine equiaxed and homogeneous grain structure. FSP is considered to be a new processing technique and more experimental and analytical investigations are needed to advance the industrial utilization of FSP. Friction Stir Processing (FSP), which is an emerging technology for a solid state technique to fabricate aluminium composites. In present work, FSP is applied to Al 6082/ Ti-Ni in order to analyze the effect of Ti-Ni on the microstructure, homogeneity and mechanical properties. newline newline newline newlineThe present research work is divided into two parts. In First part a single pass FSP was carried out at 1800, 1400, and 1120 RPM, with transverse speed of 50, 37.5, and 25mm/min and an axial force of 10 KN to produce composition. The alloying elements were added to base metal at different volume fraction as 3.75%, 5%, 6.25%, and 7.5%. newline newline newline newlineIn the second part the microstructure was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Various phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) the results shows grain size refined, micro hardness increases substantially, effect of alloying element at different fraction on grain size is also reported. Uniform mixing of the Ti and Ni in Al 6082 is achieved. The micro- hardness is also increased by more than 30% under different rotation speed. newline
