The Double Vision Ethnicity and Identity in Select Novels of Gloria Naylor Amy Tan and Bharati Mukherjee

Abstract

The American multicultural literature is wildly original, steeped in a wider world, yet unmistakably American. Unlike American immigrants of an earlier era, they balance assimilation with a staunch ethnic pride. This new literature, born from the ethnic experience, forged by an immigrant will, can no longer be considered alien. It is American now. It is apparently a deeper wound for the immigrant women, who are engaged in the struggle to fashion a new identity for themselves in an alien culture. This study examines the contributions of women novelists to the field of multicultural literature which helps to enhance cross-cultural understanding and respect for individuals. It also accents the contributions that other cultural groups have made to society. newline
