Abstract
newlineThe project was undertaken to develop 6 Antidiabetic Polyherbal formulations of hydro alcoholic extract of leaves, heartwood, seed and fruits of 10 medicinal plants. 10 plants like Annona squamosa,Morus alba,Nelumbo nucifera,Psidium guajava are seldom used in anti-diabetic formulations currently available in the market. Besides these emerging antidiabetic plants some traditional plants were also identified to develop the polyherbal formulations viz. Momordica charantia,Coccnia indica, Syzium cumini,Gymnea sylvestre, Pterocarpus marsupium,Piper longum. All 6 formulations were combined on the basis of their targeted sites of action to achieve the best combination with best antidiabetic effect comparable to standard glibenclamide. The acute toxicity study of all 6 formulations showed that all formulations are safe to use and showed no discernible behavior up to 2g per kg b.wt.in rats. 2 dose levels were chosen for the evaluation of antidiabetic activity of all 6 developed polyherbal formulation in STZ induced albino wistar diabetic rats 60mg per kgb.wt .Glibenclamide was used as standard. BGL was measured at 0 hr after 3 hrs.on day 5, 10 and 15 of the study with the help of glucometer. All 6 formulations were compared on the basis of biochemical parameters viz.TC,TG,HDL,LDL,SGPT, SGOT, Urea and Creatinine of blood plasma. For Quality control and standardization of herbal formulation, all 6polyherbal formulations were subjected to HPTLC fingerprinting analysis with the help of standard marker compounds to ensure the availability of different active constituents in formulation. For safety assessments heavy metal content and microbial load determination were carried out by atomic absorption spectroscopy and by plate count method as per API. All 6 polyherbal formulations showed significant antidiabetic activity however polyherbal FD proved to be best combination in all 6 polyherbal formulations which consist of amalgamation of only emerging antidiabetic plants in fixed doses.
