Genetic Studies Involving Maldandi Cytoplasm in Rabi Sorghum Sorghum bicolour L Moench

Abstract

In order to identify number genes governing restoration and to identify stable newlinerestorer on maldandi current experiment was planned. The segregation pattern in two newlinecrosses M31-2A x DSMR 8 and M31-2A x DSMR 4 at F2 generation was 54:10 and newlinerevealed the role of two genes out of three genes were necessary for fertility restoration. newlineSame crosses were forwarded to F3 and back crossed with M31-2A to check the newlinesegregation pattern and to confirm the F2 segregation ratio. The segregation pattern in newlineF3 and BC1 were 10:44 and 1:1 respectively, which reconfirmed the F2 segregation ratio newlineof 54:10. newlineAmong the 54 superior germplasm used for fertility restoration studies only two newlineIS 19450 and IS 29269 were found to be reliable restorers on the maldandi cytoplasm newlinehaving 99.00 and 86.61 per cent restoration, respectively. Further, these lines evaluated newlinefor genetic diversity along with M35-1. Adequate diversity was observed among the newlinestudied genotypes, which fell into seven different clusters and the cluster I was the newlinebiggest with 34 genotypes followed by cluster II with 16 genotypes. Rests of the newlineclusters were solitary. In the present study, 1000 grain weight was the highest newlinecontributor towards divergence. Highest inter cluster distance was observed between newlinecluster VI and VII. The cluster means were calculated for each character and ranks were newlinegiven based on scores obtained for all eleven characters. Of the clusters, a solitary newlinecluster V having a genotype IS 12735 ranked first followed by cluster IV (IS 29269) newlineand cluster VII (IS 7987) and could be utilized for future breeding program. The newlinegenotypic combination IS 7987 with IS 26025 and IS 21735 with IS 26025 came out to newlinebe most divergent pairs among the 55 minicore having the individual D2 values of 1070.07 and 942.83 respectively, along with moderate per se performance for the grain newlineyield.
