Abstract
Gyroscopes have been the integral part of various applications ranging from space
newlinelaunch and navigation to defense and consumer electronics, since they measure absolute angular velocity of a rotating object. Amongst these, fiber optic gyroscopes
newline(FOGs) have been the most popular technology over the last three decades, due to
newlinethe advancements in lasers, low loss optical fibers and optoelectronics. Sophisticated
newlinemonitoring tools, choice of key optical components and gaps in the other technologies have been prompting new ideas and improvisation techniques to make FOGs
newlinean infallible technology. Angular rate measurements are mainly accomplished using two methods viz. interferometry and resonance enhancement. Gyroscopes that
newlineutilize the former are known as interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (IFOGs) and
newlinethose that use the latter are resonant fiber optic gyroscopes (RFOGs).
