Abstract
newlineABSTRACT
newline
newlineThe thesis was embodied with the Synthesis, characterization, catalytic and
newlinebiological activity studies of some metal incorporated and acid functionalized
newlineMCM-41 mesoporous materials . Accordingly, the entire research work and the
newlinerelated literature review were presented in seven consecutive chapters.
newlineChapter 1: Introduction
newline
newlineThe introduction of the work was discussed in chapter 1. In this chapter, the
newlinebackground of mesoporous materials, and in particular the properties and catalytic
newlineapplications of MCM-41 was presented.Among the broad range of applications
newlineexhibited by these materials, mainly their role as photocatalysts, adsorbents,
newlineheterogeneous catalysts and antimicrobial agents were given more importance. These
newlineaspects have driven to template the scope and objectives of the present research work.
newlineChapter 2: Materials and Methods
newline
newlineThe materials used for the research work and the methods incorporated in the
newlinesynthesis of the mesoporous materials, organic derivatives were given in chapter 2.
newlinePure MCM-41, metal incorporated mesoporous materials like Mn and Al-MCM-41,
newlineacid functionalized mesoporous materials like sulphonic acid (-SO3H) and
newlinephosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40) functionalized MCM-41 materials were
newlinesynthesized using co-precipitation method. These materials were characterized using
newlineXRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, N2 adsorption-desorption, and UV-Vis DRS instrumental
newlinetechniques. The photocatalytic activity studies were conducted using photocatalytic
newlinechamber and the absorbance was studied using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. Atomic
newlineabsorption spectrophotometerwas used to record the concentration of the metal ion in
newlineits aqueous solution, before and after contact with the mesoporous materials.
newlineSimilarly, the chalcone derivatives (3a-e) synthesized with the catalytic role of
newlinethesemesoporous materials were characterized using

newlineHNMR,
newlineCNMR and Mass
newlinespectral techniques.
newlineChapter 3: Photocatalytic activity studies of metal incorporated mesoporous
newlinesilica materials towards degradation of some organic dyes
