Abstract
Demand for iron ore has taken off in recent years led by rising
newlinesteel production in the industries which indicate a rising demand for iron
newlineores there by necessitating the adoption of rapid and accurate approaches to
newlineiron ore exploration and grade assessment There has been a need to find new
newlinemethods other than the conventional methods which will make the
newlineexploration easier and cost effective thereby necessitating the adoption of
newlinerapid and accurate approaches to iron ore exploration and grade assessment It
newlineis in this context that hyperspectral radiometry and remote sensing is seen as a
newlinepotential tool
newlineThis thesis addresses this issue and examines the potential of the
newlineVisible NIR and SWIR energy of the EMR in differentiating iron ores of
newlinedifferent grades in a rapid manner using hyperspectral radiometry This thesis
newlinealso examines the potential of hyperspectral satellite images in iron ore
newlinemapping and grade estimation in the Noamundi and Joda mines Jharkhand
newlineand Orissa states of India Using different iron ore samples from the study
newlineregion certain spectro radiometric measurements and geochemical analysis
newlinewere carried out and the results have been presented From the spectral
newlinemeasurements it is seen that the landcover ground features in general and
newlineiron ores in particular show their characteristic reflectance and absorption
newlinespectra The strength of reflectance and absorption at definite wavelength
newlineregion is controlled by the chemical composition of the iron ores
