Channel Modelling and Space Shift Keying Application in Space Communications

Abstract

The technique of data transmission and reception with multiple antennas are most powerful tool for high data rates and improved reliability in communications systems. Spatial Modulation (SM) is an attractive method due to its better energy efficiency and low system complexity. newlineIn SM technique, the detector is based on an ad-hoc design, and only assumption about channel is artificial. In this technique, the index of the transmitting antenna is exploited for providing newlineadditional information bits. The core principle of the SM technique is that the larger is the distinction between the channel signatures, easier is the discrimination of the signals at the receiver. SM performs better when the channel gains are sufficiently different from each other. newlineSpace Shift Keying (SSK) is a useful technique that exploits SM for recent wireless communication systems. In SSK, one of the antennae is switched ON for data transmission at a time while all other antennas don t radiate any power. The antenna index is used as the only means newlinefor the transfer of information in SSK which also makes its implementation easier as compared to SM. This absence of symbol information eliminates the transceiver elements necessary for amplitude phase modulation transmission and reception. In first work of our research, we newlineinvestigate the performance of satellite communication systems acquiring the space shift keying (SSK) modulation technique over Shadowed-Rician (SR) land mobile satellite (LMS) link. Specifically, we discuss the analytical performance over independent and identically distributed newline(i.i.d.) SR fading channels in terms of symbol error rate (SER), diversity order, and average capacity. We consider the effect of elevation angles on the SER performance, diversity order, newlineand channel capacity of the SSK-assisted satellite communication system.
