Abstract
Handmade carpets made in India are mainly wool oriented. Premium quality handmade
newlinecarpets are either Turkish hand knotted of Persian hand knotted. Hand knotted carpets
newlineafter knotting in vertical loom are subjected to chemical washing to improve its look and
newlinelustre/sheen. The carpets are given chemical treatments sequentially with diluted sulphuric
newlineacid followed by bleaching powder solution and washing. Treatment of diluted sodium
newlinehydroxide solution is given finally which is followed by rinsing and neutralisation. There
newlineis no standardized method existed in the industry for such chemical treatment. The
newlineresidual presence of active chlorine in carpet may give rise to AOX problem due to which
newlinemost of the washed carpets do not meet the present global standard of REACH. Carpets,
newlinethen, are no more eco-friendly because of the presence of harmful chemicals.
newlineNo literature on chemical washing of carpet is available although actions of alkali
newlineon wool or action of acid on wool has been studied. The sequential treatment on woollen
newlinecarpet is a new process that needs to be standardised.
newlineA study on the Influence of Chemical Processing on the Functional Properties
newlineHandmade Woollen Carpets was taken to investigate the influence of chemicals on
newlinefunctional properties of handmade woollen carpet. The foremost purpose of the study was
newlineto develop lustre on woollen carpet. Sequential treatments of woollen yarn and carpets
newlinewere carried out with sulphuric acid, sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide. Initially
newlinewoollen yarn was selected for the purpose.
