Abstract
newline The study assessed the management practices and challenges faced by cow
newlineshelters (Gaushalas) in Southern Rajasthan covering 150 cow shelters (48 rural,
newline102 urban) in eight districts through personal interviews using a pre-tested
newlinequestionnaire.
newlineIt was observed that the majority of the Gaushalas in rural (89.58%) and
newlineurban (93.14%) areas were established between 1986 and 2020, had higher of
newlineilliterate group (22.92%) in rural area and graduate group (40.20%) in urban area.
newlineRegarding number of lactating animals, majority (81.25%) of rural and 88.24%
newlinein urban area were belonged to medium group of lactating animals, majority
newline(58.33%) of respondents in rural and 67.65% in urban area belonged to small
newlinegroup according to their number of workers, majority (93.75%) of respondents in
newlinerural cow shelters (Gaushalas) had no practices of value addition of dung and
newlineurine, 100% of the respondents from both rural and urban cow shelters had
newlineadequate availability of feed and fodder, majority (75.00%) of the rural and
newline93.14% of urban respondents were belonged to small group according to land
newlineavailability, had tube-well as a major source of water by majority (58.33%) in
newlinerural and 69.61% in urban respondents. Majority (58.33 %) of the respondents in
newlinerural and 57.84% of the respondents in urban area had access to veterinary
newlinehospitals.
newlineMajority of the respondents from rural (56.25%) and urban (69.61%) cow
newlineshelters (Gaushalas) had medium knowledge about animal husbandry
newlinemanagement practices. The respondents from rural area had knowledge of
newline Milking , Feeding , Health care with ranked 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively.
newlineThe respondents from urban area had knowledge of Feeding , Housing
newlineand Health care with ranked 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively. The respondents from rural had the least knowledge of Housing whereas, from urban area had the least
newlineknowledge of Milking .
newlineMajority of the respondents from rural cow shelters had knowledge about
newlinethe Green fodder feeding to all categories of animals
