Pain Perception and Parental Satisfaction among Infants Receiving Immunizations

Abstract

A quantitative true experimental posttest only control design with simple random sampling technique allocated 400 infants into four groups with 100 infants in each group. The interventions were oral sucrose for group 1, 4 S s technique for group 2, oral sucrose with 4 S s technique for group 3 and routine measures for group 4.The post vaccination pain was assessed by the modified Riley pain scale and parental satisfaction by 5 point Likert scale. newlineBy Bonferronit-test. The pain perception of group 1 and group 4 has a statistically significant difference with other groups whereas group 2 has statistically significant difference with other groups except with group 3 (0.27). Group 1, 2 and 3 had significant effect in reducing the pain perception than group 4. Group 2 and group 3 had similar impact on pain perception clearly confirms that 4S s technique has a significant impact in reducing pain perception. newlineThere was a significant difference in parental satisfaction between group 1 and group 2 (± 1.52), group 1 and group 3 (± 3.56), group 1 and group 4 (± 3.72), group 2 and group 3 (± 2.04), group 2 and group 4 (± 5.24) and group 3 and group 4 (± 7.28). Group 1, 2 and 3 have experienced higher satisfaction whereas group 4 has experienced satisfaction. It confirms that the parental satisfaction was higher among who received 4S s technique with or without oral sucrose. newlineCorrelation showed that significant negative correlation in group 1(r = -0.34), group 4 (r = -0.29), group 2(r = -0.41) and group 3(r = -0.46). Therefore, revealed that lesser the pain perception, higher the parental satisfaction. newline All the three interventions had significant effect in reduction of pain perception in infants and also increase the satisfaction. Amongst, 4 S s technique was found to be the very effective technique during immunizations for the infants. newline newline
