Abstract
Background: Periodontal disease is one of the two major dental diseases affecting
newlinehuman population. As per the World Health Organization report, 80% of the
newlinepopulations of developing countries rely on traditional medicines, mostly.
newlineantimicrobial agents have been and are being tested throughout the world in order to
newlinedetermine which derivatives are effective and safe to be used as preventive
newlineformulation to stall dental plaque formation and/or to stop the colonization of disease
newlinecausing microorganisms. Morus alba is one such plant which has a long history of
newlinemedicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine.
newlineAim: The aim of the present study was to assess and compare the effectiveness of
newlineMorus alba gel with Chlorhexidine gel on Moderate periodontitis among 35 to 55
newlineyear old subjects.
newlineMaterials and Methods: A Concurrent Parallel Randomized Controlled Clinical
newlineTrial was conducted at KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, Belagavi, India. The
newlineclinical trial was registered at Clinical Trial Registry India before the recruitment of
newlinefirst subject. A total of 30 subjects were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion
newlinecriteria. The subjects were randomly divided into study and control group having 60
newlineperiodontal pockets each. Clinical and microbial parameters like Gingival index,
newlinePlaque index, Periodontal pocket depth (PPD), number of periodontal microorganisms
newlinefrom subgingival plaque sample were assessed. On the same day of recruiting the
newlinesubjects, Scaling, Root planning and Curettage were completed. Respective gels were
newlineadministered 3 times with an interval of 15 days. Final assessment was done at the
newlineend of 45 days from the baseline examination. Data was entered in Microsoft excel

newlineMann whitney U test and Wilcoxon sign rank test were used for statistical analysis.
newlineResults: Mann Whitney U test showed that there was no statistically significant
newlinedifference in the Plaque, Gingival and PPD score
