Abstract
Electric power is one of the most important elements of infrastructure needed for
newlinethe economic growth and prosperity of any country. The adequate and
newlineuninterrupted power supply is essential for the growth of various sectors of the
newlineeconomy be the industrial, agricultural, manufacturing or service sector. The
newlineservices like hospitals, railways, banking etc. run almost on the continuous supply
newlineof electricity. Electricity is needed to support the global digital world in which the
newlinelimitations of physical distances are totally removed. Electricity can be produced
newlineby using conventional and non-conventional sources of energy. Coal, petroleum
newlineand natural gas are the popular conventional sources whereas solar, wind, hydro,
newlinenuclear are among the most common non-conventional sources. Most of the
newlinecountries majorly depend on conventional sources, specially coal, for producing
newlineelectricity but these sources are depleting rapidly and they are non renewable also.
newlineFurther, they add pollutants to the environment and become a cause of global
newlinewarming. Hydropower has been emerging as a leading renewable source for
newlineelectricity generation globally.
