Abstract
ABSTRACT
newlineOut of 347 amphibian species, rhacophoridae comprises of 54 species and ranidae
newlinecomprises of 90specieswhich are either aquatic, terrestrial orbelongto bothhabitat. The ranidae
newlineand rhacophoridae are wetland species and found near perennial water. Inspite of close relationship
newlinebetween the families, difference inecological niche and habitat isprominent. Rhacophoridae are
newlinefound on trees, intree holes and inhouse. Foamnestof rhacophoridae is adhered to twigs above
newlinethewater level. Both groups are seasonal breeders. Ranidae are found in permanent ponds rich
newlinewith hydrophytes or thick vegetation nearby. If we study the nature, Polypedates maculatus is
newlinearboreal and frequently encountered near the habitation of human.Amplecting pairs of ranidae
newlinemove and layeggs inscattered mannerwhich adhered to aquatic plant. Present study provides a
newlinecomparative assessment of behaviour likeecological and breedingstrategyof two anuranspecies
newlineof ranidae (Euphlyctis hexadactylus) and rhacophoridae (Polypedates maculatus) in North
newlineOdisha andNorthWest Odisha.
newlineObjectives and Tasks Carried out:
newlineThe objectives of the proposed investigation were to study the following:
newline1. Habit and habitat of E. hexadactylus and P. maculatus in North Odisha and North
newlineWest Odisha.(Inter district variation)
newline2. Body size, sexratio, sizeat first maturityand clutchsizeof both species. (Differences in
newlinelocalities with respect to two different families)
newline3. Overviewof breeding strategy, development and tadpole characterization of these
newlinespecies sampled during the studyperiods.
