Assessment of Socio Economic Constraints in Relation to Generate Higher Income in Sericulture From Some Socio Personal and Management Factors in Some Districts of West Bengal

Abstract

In India, sericulture is generally practiced by the small and marginal farmers, who are lacking the ability to increase Knowledge level, nourish Technology adoption behaviour and maximize Income due to some socio-personal and management factors studied here. The assessment of socio-personal and management factors associated with farmer s Knowledge level, Technology adoption behaviour and Income in sericulture under the three districts i.e., Murshidabad, Nadia and South 24 Parganas of West Bengal has been carried out. The consistency and dependency level in relation to a total of 21 independent socio-personal and management variables (x1-x21) were assessed for Knowledge level (y1), Technology adoption behaviour (y2) and Income (y3) of a total of 127 farmers purposively selected from villages under the blocks Nabagram and Khargram in Murshidabad, Karimpur II in Nadia and Kulpi in South 24 Parganas districts. newlineIn this study, a total of 21 independent variables (x1-x21) were studied to understand the nature of impact on three dependent variables (y1-y3). Empirical data analysis executed the mean, mode, median values of all variables indicating their significance in statistical means. The lowest CV% was found in Land holding (x6) whereas higher in No. of days engaged in sericulture rearing (x21) indicating the highest dispersion or distribution of the data among the variables. In descriptive statistics, a total of 19 independent variables (except x11 and x21) showed positive consistency with a wide range. The socio-personal variable Mass media exposure (x11) and management variable No. of days engaged in sericulture rearing (x21) showed negative consistency levels. Among all dependent variables, Knowledge level (y1) and Technology adoption behaviour (y2) showed consistency in nature whereas Income (y3) is found inconsistent. The highest correlation was found in between Utilization of information sources (x10) with Knowledge level (y1) and Technology adoption behaviour (y2) indicating more uses of information, more newline
