Abstract
Splicing become an inevitable process in the production of knotless
newlineyarn in the staple fibre spinning process. Though there are different splicing
newlinemethods, the pneumatic splicing is the widely used method to join the yarn
newlinewithout a knot using compressed air. The function of the Pneumatic Splicer
newlineis to untwist and retwist the overlapped yarn ends. Untwisting and retwisting
newlineare the sequential operations in any pneumatic splicer and are independent to
newlineeach other. It is well known fact that the optimum untwisting followed by
newlinethe proper retwisting yields better Retained Splice Strength (RSS) and
newlineRetained Splice Appearance (RSA). In addition to the yarn and fibre
newlineparameters, air pressure, untwisting airflow and untwisting time are the
newlinesplicer parameters in untwisting. Likewise, overlapping length, air pressure,
newlineretwisting airflow and retwisting time are the retwisting splicer parameters.
newlineIn order to study the influence and interactive effect of all splicer
newlinevariables, they are made it as two groups based on their functionality namely
newlineuntwisting and retwisting variables to study them separately. The studies of
newlineinfluencing splicer parameters had been carried out under three-factor threelevel
newlineBox-Behnken design on three different combed cotton yarn counts
newlinenamely Ne 20/1, Ne 40/1 and Ne 60/1 produced by Ring Spinning.
newlineInteractive effects of the parameters had been analysed through contour plots
newlineand optimization analysis had been done using a statistical software called
newlineMinitab. Based on the observations and outcomes of the studies of
newlineinfluencing splicer parameters, a new improved splicer has been designed.
newlineThe new design has been verified using Computational Fluid Dynamics
newline(CFD) with respect to airflow pattern, airflow balancing between nozzles and
newlinethe behaviour of yarn under the influence of compressed air
