Abstract
This study has helped to analyse the various patterns of electrophysiological abnormalities seen in MS, especially pertaining to our Indian population. We have also analysed in detail, the relationship between symptomatology, duration and severity of the MS with various electrophysiological abnormalities. We have investigated the interrelationship of cognitive dysfunction among patients with MS with event related
newlinepotentials. P300 potentials showed a significant correlation with cognitive rather than
newlinephysical fatigue in our sample. PNCS have demonstrated that a significant number of
newlineindividuals do have peripheral nerve abnormalities also. Polysomnography has proved to
newlinebe a useful tool to assess the quality of sleep in people with MS, and did show
newlinecorrelation with cognitive fatigue. This study has also helped develop a continuous
newlineinterval scaled objective scoring system the CEP score to quantify the disease burden
newlinein subjects with MS which can be used in clinical as well as research purposes. Electrophysiological measures show a strong correlation with many of the
newlineclinical manifestations of multiple sclerosis like measures of gait and balance, number of
newlinefalls, cognitive impairment, cognitive fatigue, and sleep impairment. A small number of
newlinepatients also had peripheral nerve abnormalities like prolonged CMAP, SNAP or F wave
newlinelatency, reduced CMAP or SNAP amplitude. Hence, it is prudent to assume that
newlineelectrophysiological investigations still are highly relevant in the diagnosis and
newlinemanagement of MS related comorbidities.
