It basically means a tale made out of imagination and courtly romance, also the literature quality and pre-occupations written in the language of romance particularly romantic stories. With time it meant so many other things. By the end of the 17th century in both French and English the word romantic, meant more than just imagination or fiction, extravagant or marvelous, bizarre, exaggeration, whimsical, chimerical. With feelings of disapproval also the adjective romantic was used. Also with approval especially while describing landscape s pleasing qualities
