Abstract
The present study was undertaken in Pune and Satara districts of Maharashtra state
newlineand financial feasibility, marketing management of protected cultivation of rose, gerbera and
newlinecarnation cut flowers along with constraints in production, marketing and export were
newlineanalysed. The primary data were collected from the 180 cut flower growers which comprised
newline60 rose, 60 gerbera and 60 carnation growers and secondary data were collected from
newlineGovernment publications and websites. The cost of cultivation per acre of rose, gerbera and
newlinecarnation cut flowers was worked out to 28,25,326, 28,53,307 and 35,45,576,
newlinerespectively. The net returns per acre of rose, gerbera and carnation cut flowers were
newlineestimated to be 33,73,544, 20,71,696, 31,23,512, respectively. The benefit cost ratio of
newlinerose, gerbera and carnation polyhouses were more than unity and the internal rate of return
newlinewere higher than the interest rate indicated that, they were financially feasible. Producers
newlineshare in consumers rupee was higher in carnation cut flower. In the production, lack of
newlineskilled labours and in marketing and export of cut flowers price fluctuations were the major
newlineconstraints. There was positive and significant growth with less variation and instability in all
newlinearea, production and productivity of flowers in India and floriculture exports was increased
newlinewith a compound growth rate of 11.03 per cent per annum from 1994-95 to 2018-19.
newlineGermany, Netherlands and U.K. were the most stable and loyal importers of Indian flowers.
newlineThe African zone and Oceanic zone have a lot of potential with better growth. European zone
newlinewas the most stable zone. Export of rose and carnation cut flowers from India was perfectly
newlinecompetitive. The study concludes that, effort should be made by the state and other
newlinestakeholders to promote floriculture enterprise in areas where unemployment is rampant,
newlineunder the Skill India and Startup India programmes. Governments should effectively
newlineimplement market intervention scheme regularly to protect cut flower grower s interest.
