Abstract
The Chilika lagoon is present in Odisha in the eastern part of India between 190
newline28and#42892; and 190 54and#42892; N latitude and 850 05and#42892; and 850 38and#42892; E longitude. Chilika is the largest
newlinecoastal brackish water lagoon of Asia and second largest coastal lagoon in the world.
newlineThe brackish water coastal lagoon is very versatile aquatic ecosystem harbouring many
newlinemicroalgae. Keeping in mind that microalgae are promising source of lipid for biodiesel
newlineproduction with limited notation has been carried out on microalgae isolated from the
newlineChilika lagoon.
newlineThe aim of the study is to survey the water quality of Chilika lagoon,
newlinemicroalgal/phytoplankton diversity, isolate selected microalgae and grow them under
newlinedifferent stress conditions (pH, salt, temperature, nitrogen and phosphate) for lipid
newlineproduction to be used as biodiesel. The samples were collected from nine sites (S1 to S9) under four different sectors
newlineof Chilika lagoon such as Northern Sector, Central sector, Southern Sector and Outer
newlinechannel Sector of Chilika lagoon were selected for water sample collection. In Northern
newlinesector, water samples were collected from one site, Mangalajodi (S1); in Central Sector,
newlinefrom three sites, Barakul (S2), Nalaban (S3) and Kalijai (S4); in Southern Sector from
newlinethree sites, Rambha (S5), Ghantasila (S6) and Badakuda (S7), and in Outer Channel
newlineSector from two sites, Sipakuda (S8) and Arkhakuda (S9). Water samples were collected
newlinethrice from each site during 2014 to 2015, in the pre-monsoon (Summer), monsoon
newline(Rainy) and post-monsoon (Winter) period. Physico-chemical parameters of water of
newlineChilika lagoon such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, water transparency,
newlinechloride, nitrate and phosphate content at nine sites were analysed during 2014 to 2015.
newlineMicroscopic observation and microphotography of all samples were carried out.
