Abstract
This study aims to explore the educational and vocational aspirations as well as the challenges faced by children enrolled under the EWS quota in Chandigarh s private schools, as mandated by the RTE Act 2009. Using a mixed methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from 200 Grade VIII EWS children (both boys and girls) and their parents with qualitative insights from interviews and case studies. The findings reveal that EWS children possess a strong
newlinedesire to pursue education as a pathway to financial security and social mobility, particularly in fields such as medicine and engineering. However, these aspirations are often hindered by language barriers, limited parental support, inadequate access to academic resources, social discrimination, and financial hardship. The study also highlights systemic inequities in policy implementation, especially regarding the inclusion and treatment of EWS children within private schools. Many children face social isolation, low self--esteem, and academic struggles related to their socio--economic background. Parental perspectives further illuminate the emotional and financial burdens associated with private schooling, despite their unwavering support for their children s education. To address these challenges, the study recommends policy reforms focused on consistent financial support, inclusive school practices, teacher sensitization, and targeted academic and emotional interventions. In conclusion, while the EWS quota presents essential opportunities for marginalized children, it requires stronger institutional accountability and comprehensive support to overcome barriers and ensure genuine educational equity.
