Investigation on self crack healing ability of microwave sintered and conventional sintered al2o3 sic ceramics

Abstract

Alumina (Al2O3) is the most commonly used and characterized ceramic material and has attracted substantial interests in ceramics community. The high stiffness, excellent thermal stability and chemical resistance of Al2O3 make it practically a very important engineering material, and if we can overcome its brittleness issue and enhance the mechanical properties, its applications will be much wider. The possibilities for solving these problems are enhancing the mechanical properties by refining the microstructure by adding a secondary phase material, detect and repair the dangerous cracks, avoid use of low reliability component by conducting a proof test and activating the self-crack-healing ability of structural ceramics. newline
