Abstract
The Indian union government created three new states in November 2000.
newlineThese were Chhattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand from Uttar Pradesh,
newlineand Jharkhand from Bihar. This was the largest reorganization since the postindependence
newlinedrawing of the state boundaries in 1956. This event was accompanied
newlineby much debate along political and social lines. In the absence of data,
newlinethe debate along economic dimension was bereft of much substance. A databased
newlinerigorous analysis is important since demands for separate states keep
newlinere-emerging from various regions of India, one successful being the creation of
newlineTelangana state in June 2014. About two decades have passed since the reorganization
newlineof November 2000, allowing us to research into economic facets in some
newlinedetail. In this thesis, we focus on three aspects- aggregate economic growth,
newlinerural informal enterprises, and household welfare- forming three core chapters
newlineof this thesis.
