Abstract
Much attention has been devoted to UWB (ultra-wideband) antenna implementation where
newlinethere is a restriction of cost, weight, size, performance and easy integration with microwave
newlinecircuits. UWB antenna provides amicable solution to high speed data transmission for short
newlinerange wireless communication system, satellite, aircraft and radio application.Bit rate more than
newline100 Mbps within a 10 m radius for wireless personal area communication (WPAN) is
newlinesupported.Operating frequency band for UWB antenna should be in the range 3.1-10.6 GHz
newlineand should follow the transmit power spectral density as defined by Federal Communication
newlineCommission (FCC).The shortcomings associated with the applications of UWB antenna
newlineincludes stability of radiation pattern, matching of impedance, electromagnetic interferences
newlineespecially for compact designs with good time domain performance.
newlineThis thesis focuses on design and performance evaluation of antennas forUWB
newlinecommunication systems. An extensive literature survey on UWB antennas is carried out in
newlinewhich the existing UWB antenna characterization approaches are assessed.Total four designs
newlineare proposed for UWB applications. UWB antenna design and simulations are carried out on
newlineComputer Simulation Technology (CST) 2014 software. All UWB antenna designs are designed
newlineon FR-4 substrate.First UWB antenna design has functional bandwidth covering UWB
newlinebandwidth range. Methods like truncation in patch, stepped partial ground plane and stepped
newlinefeed line are utilized to enhance bandwidthwhich covers whole UWB range.Parametric study
newlinefor enhancing the impedance bandwidth is also provided. ThisUWB antenna design is
newlinefabricated and tested. Measured values validates simulated results.
newlineOther three designs are of three, four and five band-notched UWB antenna. Design
newlineobjective and optimization stresses on enhancement of bandwidth and minimization of pulse dispersion.
