Development of Solid State Batteries based on Polymer Electrolytes

Abstract

In today’s automation oriented age, computer based systematization penetrating through the factory and the office into home. In this automatic system, it is mandatory to use polymer electrolytes for different purposes. Over the last few decades, a considerable amount research work have been reported on solid electrolytes due to the technological advantages, such as long self life, extreme miniaturization and a wide a wide – temperature range of operation. These solids exhibit appreciable high ionic conductivities at their operating temperatures. These solids are known as “super ionic solids” and they find wide application in solid state batteries, gas sensors, fuel cells, electrochemical display devices and analog potential memories. Due to these facts, research work on solid state electrolytes is timely an interdisciplinary area in modern science, calling upon the expertise on chemists, physicists, electrical and mechanical engineers. Among super ionic solids, solid state polymer electrolytes are the materials of current interest due to some of their unique properties like ease of preparation in the film and other forms, wide range of composition and hence control of properties, good electrode – electrolyte inter facial contacts, high value of ionic conductivity etc. these polymer electrolytes have potential to replace normal electrolyte solutions gaining attention as a new type of ion – conducting materials.
