Abstract
Advanced composites are the materials which are broadly used in structural, aerospace and
newlineautomobile sectors. These composites have excellent blend of reinforcement and matrix
newlinematerial. Metal Matrix Composites have got much research enthusiasm over a long period
newlinedue to their superb mechanical and excellent thermal properties. By appropriate blending of
newlinematrix material and reinforcement it is conceivable to get desired properties.
newlineThe majority of the exploration on Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) as of late has been
newlinefocused on the improvement of high performance particulate-strengthened composites for
newlinespecific applications. The excellent properties of these composites make them unique and
newlinetherefore development of cost effective composites are very much essential.
newlineAluminum MMCs have proved to be important class of materials which can replace a
newlinenumber of conventional materials because of its light weight and strength, due to which
newlinethey are used in automotive, aerospace, defense and leisure industries. During the last few
newlineyears, the main thrust in automotive industry is to reduce the weight of automobiles by use
newlineof these composites where fuel efficiency is increased, exhaust emission decrease, vehicle
newlineperformance and increase in profit and cost effectiveness. Therefore the use of metal matrix
newlinecomposites in automobile sector has increased dramatically.
newlineAl-MMCs even though having excellent properties, they have been slow in replacing the
newlinetraditional materials in a wide range of components. Usage of this technology in the
newlineautomotive segment has been limited because of difficulties in the manufacturing and high
newlinecost. The main two reasons for the cost of these composites are primarily the raw material
newlinecost of aluminum-matrix material and the ceramic-reinforcement particles. The second
newlinefactor is the fabrication/inspection process.
newlineTherefore this research work attempts to analyze the effect of fused Silica Oxide (SiO2)
newlineparticulate on mechanical properties, fracture toughness of Al-alloy (LM13) metal matrix
newlinecomposites
