A Study of organizational climate and its impact on occupational role stress amongst faculty in higher education

Abstract

The world is evolving at a fast pace with advancements in the industrial revolution, economic reforms, technological progress, emphasis on the continuous need for excellence, competitiveness in restructuring social, economic, technological and legal setup across the globe. Change has become an inevitable part of every domain. With the invasion of technology and inter-disciplinary teaching and learning, changes are noticed in the education sector too. India ranks third in terms of the number of universities in the world and Karnataka ranks third in terms of the number of universities as per All India Survey on Higher Education 2018-2019, Ministry of HRD, India annual report. newlineTo meet the work demands, employees spend around 50% of their time in the organizations and hence the climate (environment) in the organization, the relationship between subordinates, peers, superiors and the management play a vital role. Constant interaction with the number of stakeholders and the need to be at pace with the competition makes them feel stressed. An employee will be able to give their best when there is a conducive environment at the workplace. newlineAs per the All India Survey on Higher Education 2018-2019, Ministry of HRD, India annual report, there are 993 universities in India. Several intrinsic and extrinsic factors induce stress among faculty in higher education. However, despite India having 993 universities, there is little data showing the impact of organizational climate on occupational role stress among faculty in higher education. The current study aimed to gauge the relationship between demographic variables (viz Age, Gender, Marital Status, Years of Experience, Course and Hierarchy), Organisation Climate and Occupational Role Stress among faculty in higher education.
