Hand gesture based continuous sign language recognition system

Abstract

Sign Language Recognition (SLR) system plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between deaf-mute individuals and those who can hear and speak. Gesture recognition is a type of perceptual computing user interface that is capable of capturing the human gestures and interpreting these gestures. Gesture is a non-verbal action that is being performed by the humans. Signs are gestures performed by the hearing and speech impaired people as a means of communication. Sign languages vary across regions, including American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), Indian Sign Language (ISL), Arabic Sign Language (ArSL), Chinese Sign Language (CSL), and others. The features of sign language encompass Manual Parameters, which consist of Hand-shape, Hand-orientation, Location, and Motion, as well as Non-manual Parameters, which involve Gaze, Facial expression, Mouth movements, Position, and Motion of the Trunk and Head (Catherine et al. 2022). newline
