Abstract
Vendors are the important part of unorganized sector and an integral part of urban
newlineeconomy. Street vendors have a very low skill and low capital investment is
newlinerequired to start source of livelihood. In comparison to other trades it is easier to
newlineenter in a street vending for the poor migrants as well as lower income groups
newlineliving in the city.
newlineAccording the Ministry of Urban development and poverty alleviation, there are
newlineover one crore vendors in India contributing to over 50% of countryand#8223;s savings and
newline63 % of the GDP comes from vendors. Despite theses the vendors are seen as
newline encroachersand#8223; and as public nuisanceand#8223; who obstruct traffic.
newlineIn the urban areas mostly street vendors are rarely accepted as other well off
newlinetraders and shopkeepers. In the city, local civilian always point out how these
newlinevendors make urban life miserable as they block pavements, create traffic
newlineproblems and also engage in disobedient activities. Shopkeepers who have
newlineproficiency with Legal permit they are also point out vendors because the quality
newlineof product is as good as departmental stores and shopping malls.
newlineNormally street vendors purchases goods from wholesale market according to
newlinetheir needs and capital (money) available. They load them in basket or on
newlinepushcart, wheel barrow or cart and moves in selected areas to effect sales. Many a
newlinetimes they announce loudly goods or articles on sale and their prices to attract
newlinecustomers. Some of them may also display goods or articles of sale on footpath
newlineand effect sales. For higher profit few purchase goods in lot, in auction or other
newlinesales. May prepare and sell his/her own products and may operate means of
newlineconveyance. Vendor may work on salary or commission basis or both.
