Abstract
Valves are mechanical devices that control the flow and pressure within a system or process. They are the main components of a piping system that conveys liquids, gases, vapors, slurries etc. A Butterfly valve (BFV) is a type of flow control device, typically used to regulate a fluid flowing through a section of pipe. A circular flat disc is positioned in the center of the pipe. The disc has a shaft through which it is connected to an actuator on the outside of the valve. The actuator turns the disc, 90 degrees either parallel or perpendicular to the flow. When the disc is parallel, flow takes place and is stopped when the disc is perpendicular. More than 70% of the valves used in the industrial piping systems are butterfly valves and find wide application because of the compact size, economical, easy to install and has less maintenance.
