Drill wear is an important aspect commonly considered in newlineevaluating the performance of a machining process Machining industries newlineessentially aim for unmanned production and better product quality Major newlineproblems in achieving high productivity and quality are caused by the newlineunexpected drill wear developed during machining The actual cutting ability newlineof the drill is reduced with increased wear resulting in poor surface finish newlineover size holes built up edges along the lips noise etc also if the newlineresharpening is delayed more material has to be ground off The rising newlinedemand for exacting performances from manufacturing systems has led to newlinenew challenges for the development of drill wear monitoring techniques newlineToday the need for such a technique is greater than it once was because of newlinethe shortage of skilled workers higher machining speeds increase in newlineprecision machining and the need to lower downtime Most of the proposed newlinewear condition monitoring systems suffer from problems such as sensitivity to newlineprocess noise difficulty in on line implementation inability to accommodate newlinevariations in cutting conditions unsuitability for shop floor implementation newlineand difficulty in the interpretation of results newlineAlthough a wide range of monitoring methods have been newlineinvestigated and developed there has been very little migration of these newlineinnovations into industrial practice newline newlineen_US
